Attack On Titan

Attack On Titan

Well it makes sense that they would make a movie made from an anime that has had a three year gap from season 1 and 2 to hold viewers over. But that can sometimes backfire because this is a two-parter. So does that means that they could have new information that the anime doesn't? But well if you are a die hard fan of Attack on Titan (the Anime or Manga) you probably won't like it. But if you are not a newcomer to the anime and want to have a very heart pumping good time, then go see this movie. But whereas I only saw episode 1 and 2 of the anime and read most of the manga, I can only give an educated review.

The Story - 7/10

As I said since the movie takes away from the source material and that makes a lot unexpected plot twists.

The premise is humanity had built itself in three giant walls to protect themselves from the ravenous Titans and have had peace for 100 years. Titans are giant human creatures that are naked and have no reproductive organs. It follows Eren Jaeger (which makes no sense since that is a German name and it's a Japanese movie), Mikasa (an overused Spanish joke) and Armin (German again!!). They live within the first wall and then it gets destroyed by a huge turned inside out, blacksmith forge Titan (So if they survived for 100 years, why didn't the Titans break the wall down earlier? Screw it, it's Anime logic). Then hundreds of people get eaten like chocolate bars and Eren and Armin only survive. Then they join a Titan fighting brigade that just now have the means to destroy the Titans (so they how did they not all get eaten by the Titans and only have a handful of humans remain? Anime logic!)

The Characters - 7/10

From what I saw the film is still keeping a bit of the characters intact.

Eren is played by Haruma Miura. He is very faithful to the character and does feel like the person you have grown to like in the manga and also the anime. Even though the story is mostly out of place from the source material, he still is Eren and not a guy playing Eren.

Mikasa is played by Kiko Mizuhara. Like Haruma, she still keeps faithful to the character and seems like Mikasa and not a person playing Mikasa. She is a pretty chameleonic personality in the movie as well. In the beginning she is very sweet and sympathetic and by the end of it we are like "Man she is a BADASS"!

Since the Titans are the biggest part of the movie, it would be stupid to not talk about them. Well, compared to the anime and manga. These ones are more scary than in both mediums. Because since the story is changed, so are the Titans when you think they come in. The CGI on them is also amazing and accomplishes how you are expected to react to them. They are disgusting, horrifying and terrible creatures. Also they laugh (when they laugh you know they are going to be more scary).

The Action - 8/10

The action in this movie is awesome and I really need to comment on the amount of gore in this movie. It has so much blood that it puts Quentin Tarantino to shame. Also in one scene, some people hide themselves in a church and then it becomes a buffet line for the Titans. When they get grappling gear, the movie turns into absolute awesomeness. But then they are more WTF moments as well. One time a soldier uses the grappling system and gets squashed by a Titan's hand and gets licked by patte thrown on a wall and eaten by a starving French guy. So they still keep the action as close to the fun of the original material.

So if you love the anime to the point that if had to sacrifice yourself to keep it on the air, then don't watch this. But if you know the story and are really going to be able to hold your suspension of disbelief enough with some awesome action and concepts. Then go watch this movie.

In terms of an action movie. It deserves a rating of 7.5/10

But in terms of close to the source material. It gets a rating of 4.5/10

I do not own these pictures. Attack on Titan is owned by Toho, Wit studio and Hajime Isayama.
