For anyone who doesn't know that much about video games based movies, they have always sucked! No matter what the source material, director or actors, they have sucked! Hollywood hasn't realised this and this film had better show them. It is turning into a box office bomb and for good reason! For anyone who doesn't know me, I love the Assassin's Creed games. They are extremely diverse in how you want to play, you are immersed into the world extremely easily and the main character that you play has a 90% chance of being likeable or interesting. Qualities that this movie doesn't have. But on the bright side, this movie wasn't set in feudal Japan so the games can still do it.
The Story - 2/10
The story in this movie seems like it wanted to have everything the Assassin's Creed fans couldn't stand from the games. Like spending the majority of the movie in the real world which is not interesting or riveting in the slightest and detracts from the best part of anything Assassin's Creed related. It follows Callum Lynch who has been executed by lethal injection and is taken in by Abstergo (actually the templar order) to be put into the Animus to follow the memories of his ancestor during the Spanish Inquisition in 1492. In this the Templars are trying to find the apple of eden to bring free will to the masses. First off, this has so much potential for a gripping and interesting scenario but it fails with the execution and pacing. I'll talk about how the characters don't help later on. Plus it isn't accurate in the sense of the Spanish templar catholics. Because by then they were already outlawed and would have been killed on sight. In the game, the templars don't have a formed organisations and just lie in the shadows and influence the events that happen in the game. In this movie, they have an actual church and are vocal about it, they would die in this type of event.
The Characters - 2/10
I must say Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard and Jeremy Irons can play really good robots. They have uninteresting motives, bland personalities and little to no chemistry. I did not care about any of these blank slates of supposed 'human beings'. Even in the Spanish inquisition there was nothing that made me care about these people. It is pointless to care or even talk about these planks of wood.
The Action - 2/10
The game's action should be easier to do right, but no! The action in the games always makes me wince whenever I stab someone in the neck with my hidden blade or break a few bones. So you would think that they would be able to intensify that to a major extent on the big screen. Again, no! Every time someone got killed or punch and beaten, all I did was watch the clock. The stuff that they do in this movie would make me squirm if it was better done. But since I did not give a stuff about these characters and hoping that they would make it out alive, no one's death felt satisfying at all.
Conclusion
Do not waste your money. Do not see this movie, whether you love the games like I do or want to watch a good movie. You will be insulted if you love Assassin's Creed and will be annoyed this movie wasted your time if you have never played the games before.
I am giving this a 2/10
I do not own any of these pictures. Assassin's Creed is owned by 20th Century Fox and Ubisoft Entertainment.
